GOSHEN, N.Y. (AP) — A 44-year-old Orange County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for killing and burying his friend.

Christopher Smith of Newburgh pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the April 2017 death of 50-year-old William McMahon. The Times Herald-Record reports he was sentenced Friday in Orange County Court.

Prosecutors say Smith stabbed McMahon in the back during an altercation after McMahon refused to leave his house. Later, he buried the bloody flooring with McMahon's body in the back yard.

Smith's lawyer argued for a lower sentence, noting Smith had no criminal record. She said McMahon was a registered sex offender with a history of minor offenses, who was dropped off at Smith's house because of his substance abuse.

The victim's niece told the judge McMahon had troubles and addictions but was a good man.
