CINCINNATI (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have activated reliever Hunter Strickland from the 60-day disabled list. Strickland broke his pinkie finger on his right hand when he punched a door after a blown save against Miami on June 18. Strickland takes the roster spot of rookie right-hander Dereck Rodriguez, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list after he strained his right hamstring during a brawl with the Dodgers on Tuesday. Infielder Pablo Sandoval, who is also out with a strained right hamstring, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open a 40-man roster spot.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Cubs right-hander Tyler Chatwood moves out of the bullpen to start tonight's game in Pittsburgh in place of left-hander Mike Montgomery, who's on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation. Chatwood made 19 starts before being shifted to relief in early August. He has issued a major league-high 90 walks in 99 2/3 innings. Right-hander Joe Musgrove starts for Pittsburgh. He is 3-1 with a 2.33 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break.
CLEVELAND (AP) — Josh Gordon has joined the Cleveland Browns at training camp after an extended absence to deal with his health. The Browns said Gordon was at the team's facility in Berea (buh-REE'-uh), Ohio, today taking part in meetings and conditioning. He's not expected to be on the field for several days. Gordon has missed most of the past four seasons because of numerous violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy. The former Pro Bowl receiver has battled addictions to drugs and alcohol.
LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Will Power will begin his bid for a third straight win at Pocono Raceway from the pole. Power turned a lap of 219.511 mph today to take the top spot and perhaps bolster his bid for a championship with four races left in the IndyCar season. Power won his 53rd pole and tied AJ Foyt for second on the career list. Scott Dixon leads the championship standings as he chases his sixth IndyCar championship. He starts 13th tomorrow.
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The third round of the Wyndham Championship has been suspended because of severe weather in Greensboro, North Carolina. Brandt Snedeker was the leader by two strokes after the second round.
