Five Palestinian Children Wounded
Feb. 17, 2000
SIDON, Lebanon (AP) _ A gunman opened fire at a school bus after the driver failed to stop at a checkpoint, wounding five Palestinian students, Lebanese security officials said.
The officials, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred at the western entrance of the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon.
They said the gunman manning the checkpoint fired at the bus with an AK-47 assault rifle. Authorities arrested him.
Ein El-Hilweh is the largest of 13 Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and home to 75,000 people. The Lebanese government has no jurisdiction in the camp, which is controlled by armed factions loyal to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and opposed to his peace deals with Israel.
