BARCELONA, Spain (AP) _ Cuba rested its three best players but still defeated Italy 60-53 Monday to remain unbeaten in women's basketball.
The Cubans, 3-0 going into the medal round, already had clinched the top spot in their preliminary group so coach Manuel Perez kept starters Regla Hernandez, Dalia Henry and Leonor Borrel on the bench. They had combined for 105 points in the first two games.
They weren't needed, however. Cuba scored nine straight points to erase Italy's early 16-12 lead and was ahead the rest of the way. The Italians 29 percent shooting kept them from challenging.
Milayda Enrique and Olga Vigil led Cuba with 11 points each and Yamilet Martinez scored 10. Italy's Mara Fullin led all scorers with 16 points.
