NEWTOWN, Pa. (AP) _ A high school was closed today at the request of police after a 14-year-old girl was found shot near its front door, officials said.
Starla Hendricks of Northampton Township, a freshman at Council Rock High, was found shot in the right side of the abdomen at 4 p.m. Tuesday and taken to St. Mary Hospital in Langhorne, where she was reported in fair condition.
Newtown Police Chief Martin Duffey said officers had been unable to determine the circumstances of the shooting. No gun was found at the scene, and there were no witnesses, he said.
There are 3,200 students in the school. Police said they asked that it be closed for safety reasons and because they wanted to search the building for the gun.
