AKRON, Ohio (AP) _ Brian Tolbert scored 24 points, including two clinching free throws with 32 seconds left, as Eastern Michigan beat Akron 82-73 Saturday.
Tolbert hit 8-of-14 shots from the field and all six of his free throws for the Eagles (9-1 overall, 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference). Theron Wilson chipped in with 13 points and Earl Boykins had 11.
Jon Zajac, with nine rebounds, led Eastern to a 42-32 advantage on the boards.
Scott Gooden scored 22 points, George Phillips 14 and Ryan Andrick 12 for Akron (3-7, 0-2 MAC).
Eastern, ahead 36-24 at the half, built the lead to 14 points on Tolbert's layup with 16:28 left.
Akron got as close as 78-73 with 33 seconds left on a basket by Andrick. But Eastern rattled off the next four points _ a pair of free throws apiece by Tolbert and Zajac.
Both teams hit 18 shots from the field, but Eastern was 20-of-26 at the line to Akron's 14-of-16.
