GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ Carolyn Peck was hired as the women's basketball coach at Florida, leaving the WNBA and returning to college after leading Purdue to the 1999 national title.

The appointment of the Orlando Miracle coach was announced Wednesday by the school. She was to be introduced at a campus news conference.

Peck succeeds Carol Ross, who quit March 22 after 12 years with the Lady Gators. She took the team to the NCAA tournament nine times.

Peck was coach and general manager of the Miracle. Before that, she coached Purdue to its championship and was honored as coach of the year by The Associated Press.
