Blue Jays Sign 2nd, 3rd Basemen
Jan. 19, 1999
TORONTO (AP) _ The Toronto Blue Jays dipped into the free-agent market to shore up their infield, agreeing Monday to one-year contracts with second baseman Joey Cora and third baseman Willie Greene.
Cora, 33, hit .276 with six homers and 32 RBI last season, splitting his season between Seattle and Cleveland. He gets a $500,000 one-year contract, of which $150,000 is guaranteed, and the chance to make $450,000 in performance bonuses based on games players.
Greene had 26 home runs and drove in 91 runs with Cincinnati two years ago. Baltimore acquired Greene from the Reds last September but didn't offer him a 1999 contract, reportedly because they didn't want to pay him as much as he would get in arbitration.
The left-handed hitter had a .270 average with 14 homers and 49 RBIs with Cincinnati but only hit .154 with one homer and five RBIs in 24 games with Baltimore.
