MANKATO, Minn. (AP) _ A man shot himself in the mouth Saturday inside a crowded grocery store after allegedly trying to cash a stolen check, police said.
The man, Patrick James Johnson, 32, was hospitalized in critical condition. No one else was injured during the noontime shooting at the grocery store in this south-central Minnesota city of 31,000.
Police were called to the market after receiving a report of a man trying to cash a stolen check, said Glenn Gabriel, Mankato public safety director.
When officers arrived, Johnson pulled a .22-caliber revolver the gun from his jacket, put it in his mouth and fired, said Gabriel. Store employees and customers took cover but no other shots were fired, he said.
