Mickey Rooney Has Heart Surgery
Dec. 21, 2000
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) _ Mickey Rooney underwent multiple bypass heart surgery after a blockage was discovered as he tested a heart machine he'd been asked to promote.
``He's in great shape and should be home on Christmas Day,'' said Kevin Pawley, manager of the 80-year-old actor.
Rooney underwent 3 1/2 hours of surgery Wednesday. Two days earlier, he was examining a medical device which scans the body like an X-ray, then produces a 3-dimensional computerized view of internal organs.
Rooney's heart scan showed narrowing of the arteries. When he visited a cardiologist the next day, doctors advised him there was complete blockage of one artery and partial blockage of another.
Rooney has vowed to be back on the road again in February with his wife Jan in their ``One Man _ One Wife'' stage show, Pawley said. He also plans to become national spokesman for the heart machine.
