LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles authorities investigating the fatal shooting of a college student have arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of murder.
Alex Zepeda was hit by gunfire Oct. 28 outside a party in the Wilmington area. The 19-year-old Cal State Fullerton sophomore died on the sidewalk.
Officials said Tuesday that that the suspect — who was not named because he's a juvenile — was arrested last week.
Investigators suspect the shooting stemmed from a longtime Wilmington gang rivalry. While Zepeda wasn't in a gang, officials say there were a few gang members at the party.
In 2014, Zepeda, a criminal justice major, had interned for Councilman Joe Buscaino, who took part in a news conference announcing the arrest. Buscaino said Zepeda was eager to do good work in his community.
