DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) _ A bus rolled several times after one of its front tires burst, killing at least 19 people and injuring 23 others in northwestern Tanzania, a police spokesman said Tuesday.
The crash Monday took place when the bus, carrying 74 people, was traveling in a remote region near Mwanza, 550 miles northwest of Dar es Salaam, said Zelothe Stephen, regional police commander.
Police were looking for the bus driver, who was believed to have been slightly injured and fled after the accident, Stephen said by telephone from Mwanza.
Buses in East Africa are often overloaded and poorly maintained.
