Fierce storm hammers Norway's Arctic
Dec. 17, 1997
OSLO, Norway (AP) _ A fierce storm with hurricane-force gusts hammered Norway's Arctic coast Wednesday, blowing the roofs off buildings and injuring at least one person.
The storm along the coast of Norway's northernmost provinces of Troms and Finnmark forced passenger ferries and ships to remain in port and disrupted air traffic.
Gusts of 115 mph were reported in Finnmark and residents were advised to remain indoors.
A woman in the village of Mehamn, on Norway's northern tip, broke her leg when a gust blew her off her feet, the Norwegian news agency NTB reported.
``Roofs have been blown off, windows smashed, a pleasure boat sank and a garage was leveled,'' said Kai Brox of the Mehamn sheriff's office.
NTB said three factories lost their roofs, and metal chimneys, road signs, garbage cans and flagpoles were swept away by the wind.
