LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Bunning has died. Bunning won 224 games in a 17-year major-league career and pitched the first perfect game in modern National League history. He was the first pitcher after 1900 to throw no-hitters in both the American and National Leagues. He was also only member of the Baseball Hall of Fame to serve in Congress. The Kentucky Republican served in both the House and the Senate. Jim Bunning was 85.
COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The ninth annual Hall of Fame Classic is on tap today at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. Baseball Hall of Famers Phil Niekro and Ozzie Smith will serve as managers, and Hall of Famers Wade Boggs, Rollie Fingers, Goose Gossage and Juan Marichal (MEHR'-ih-shal) will be the coaches. Steve Sax, Wally Joyner, Todd Zeile (zeel) and Michael Cuddyer (kuh-DY'-ur) are among former major leaguers slated to play, along with four soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York.
CHICAGO (AP) — The White Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with Cuban outfielder Luis Robert, adding another prized prospect to their system. The deal announced today is another step in an overhaul that began over the winter. With one playoff appearance since 2005 and four straight losing seasons, Chicago is rebuilding after trying to plug holes for years. Robert is projected as a center fielder.
CHICAGO (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have placed Ian Kinsler on the 10-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring. Outfielder JaCoby Jones was recalled from Triple A Toledo to fill the roster spot. Also, the Tigers acquired the contract of pitcher Arcenio Leon and Chad Bell was optioned to Toledo. Pitcher William Cuevas was designated for assignment.
CEDAR GROVE, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey high school softball pitcher has pitched a true perfect game. Cedar Grove sophomore Mia Faieta struck out all 21 batters she faced in a state playoff game Thursday. The performance helped her team defeat North Warren 4-0. Earlier this month, Faieta struck out all 15 batters she faced in a five-inning game. This season, she has 321 strikeouts.
