OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Freshman forward Rodney Buford scored 12 points to lead Creighton to a 66-57 victory over Wichita State in a Missouri Valley Conference clash Saturday.

The Bluejays (6-5, 2-1 MVC) led by as many as 14 in the first half but held only a 31-22 halftime lead. Creighton opened its biggest lead of the game, 56-38, on Tad Ackerman's 3-pointer with 7:59 left in the game.

The Shockers (4-10, 0-4) responded with a 12-0 run over the next 6:33 to close to 56-50. Carteze Loudermilk, a Wichita, Kan. native, ended the run with a 3-pointer and Creighton held on.

Chuckie Johnson added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Bluejays, who made a season-high nine 3-point shots.

Melvin McKey led Wichita State with 16 points while Larry Callis added 15 and Jamie Arnold 11.
