TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ After the threat of a lawsuit from Tampa Bay Buccaneers president Gay Culverhouse, male members of the exclusive Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club have voted to admit women as full voting members.
Bylaws providing women members with the same voting rights as men were passed during a special evening meeting Tuesday, said Lee Perdigon, president of the 76-year-old club.
At stake in the vote were rules governing both corporate and individual memberships. Before the change, women could only have memberships that limited their club privileges and gave them no say in club policies.
Other than confirming the membership's vote Tuesday, Perdigon declined to discuss any specific bylaw revisions.
The vote came when the club was under growing pressure - and facing the possibility of legal action - to revamp its rules.
Tuesday evening's vote may help quiet those accusing the club of sexual bias, but it could still face a racial issue. Club members say there are no rules barring membership because of race, but the club has no black members.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The 1992 Tour Du Pont will start in Wilmington, Del., on May 7.
After a 1,000-mile loop through the Middle Atlantic region, the race will end May 19 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.
Organizers have shortened the overall race this year by almost 150 miles, tour executive director Michael Plant said Wednesday. However, the course is more mountainous than before.
Among the expected competitors will be three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, who was 12th in the 1991 Tour Du Pont.
Also expected are 1991 Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain and top U.S. cyclist Alexi Grewal.
