Prince Andrew Visits Bankok Slum
Dec. 02, 1999
BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) _ Britain's Prince Andrew arrived by silver limousine in Bangkok's largest slum Thursday and toured schools and shelters for the poor.
The Duke of York was in Thailand to help celebrate the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who turns 72 on Sunday.
Before attending a British-style trooping of the color with the king, Andrew met AIDS patients as young as 1 at a hospice.
Clasping his hands together in the Thai gesture of greeting, Andrew also gave an impromptu English lesson on the names of zoo animals to an attentive class of children.
``Thailand holds its royal family in such respect, so to have a prince come to see us is the most wonderful event of the year,'' said Father Joe Maier of Seattle, founder of an AIDS hospice Andrew visited. ``It gives people the hope to get through another day.''
