Cascade County jail overcrowded, won't book misdemeanors
Jul. 24, 2018
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) — The Cascade County sheriff says the jail is so overcrowded he is no longer booking people charged with misdemeanors or non-violent offenses.
The Great Falls Tribune reports the regional detention center has a capacity of 360 inmates and on Monday it held 530. The detention center also has 30 inmates at other facilities.
Edwards says tensions are rising among inmates and staff and he needs to keep both safe.
Edwards notified Great Falls Police, the Montana Highway Patrol and Montana Probation and Parole about the new policy, which took effect Monday until further notice.
