SAN REMO, Italy (AP) _ Peugot driver Gilles Panizzi won the San Remo Rally on Sunday, edging teammate Francois Delecour by 16.8 seconds.

Panizzi, who teamed with co-driver Herve Panizzi, completed the race _ the 12th event of the 14-round FIA World Rally Championship _ in three hours, 52 minutes, 7 seconds.

Panizzi led throughout the three stages of the rally.

The 1-2 finish of the French drivers gave Peugeot the lead in the world manufacturers standings, with 90 points. Ford was second at 88.

Four-time world champion Tommi Makinen of Finland drove his Mitsubishi Lancer to third place, 53 seconds behind Panizzi. Marcus Gronholm of Finland came in fourth in a third Peugeot, strengthening his lead atop the world drivers standings.

With two championship races left, Gronholm leads Britain's Richard Burns by five points.
