ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) — A trial has begun for a 22-year-old Hanover Park woman accused of strangling her newborn baby almost three years ago.

Jessica Cruz is charged with killing her son, and then wrapping the body in a plastic bag and leaving it in the trash can of a public restroom in November 2011. She pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and the concealment of a homicide.

The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/1thxOZi ) reports testimony started Tuesday with witnesses who described finding the baby in the Salvation Army bathroom in Streamwood.

Prosecutors say Cruz, who already had a toddler, killed the baby to solve an unwanted pregnancy. Her public defendant says Cruz didn't intend to kill the baby and he was born dead.

The trial is expected to continue with further testimony Wednesday.
