VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) _ Former boxing champion Pernell Whitaker was sentenced Thursday to serve 30 days of a six-month jail term for his third reckless driving conviction.
Whitaker, who pleaded guilty, can serve the time on weekends, beginning May 10. The rest of the sentence was suspended.
The latest violation, driving 90 mph in a 55 mph zone on Oct. 17, was part of a long line of driving problems for Whitaker, an Olympic gold medalist and six-time world champion.
He was convicted of reckless driving twice in Virginia Beach in 1998, and was fined and given suspended sentences. Last August, Whitaker was sentenced to four days in jail for driving violations in Virginia Beach, and he served two days.
``Sweetpea'' Whitaker was a world champion in four weight classes from lightweight through junior middleweight. He retired last year.
