PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (AP) _ A man arrested in Kentucky on a traffic offense was charged today with killing four family members whose bodies were found in two homes in and near this Ohio River city.

James R. Curry, 42, was charged with murder in the killings of Emogene Spradlin, 78; her daughters Pamela Edwards, 52, and Lana Spradlin, 35; and Lana Spradlin's son, Daniel Jones, 9.

Two of the bodies were found in Emogene Spradlin's home Sunday by a family member, and the other two were later found in Curry's apartment in New Boston, Ohio, police said.

The second discovery was made after a Kentucky State Police trooper saw the suspect driving erratically in a van in Paris, Ky., and arrested him on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs, Lt. Al Rich said.

Curry had a knife on him that police believe was used in the killings, Rich said. After questioning him, Kentucky State Police told Ohio authorities to look in Curry's apartment for more victims, Rich said.

Authorities would not say exactly how the victims were killed or whether a motive had been established. Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini said Curry knew the victims, but authorities would not describe the relationship.
