Jul. 04, 1999
BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) _ Regina Jacobs set an American record for the 1,000-meter run Saturday night in the Distance Festival meet.
Jacobs, who set a national record in the 5,000 in last year's meet, set the 1,000 record in 2 minutes, 31.80 seconds, 1.13 seconds faster than Suzy Hamilton's record set four years ago in Eugene, Ore.
Svetlana Masterkova of Russia set the world record of 2:28.98 in 1996.
``You're lucky that you got the opportunity to see an American record be broken on American soil,'' Jacobs said to a child seeking an autograph after the race.
Jacobs, 35, ran the 5,000 last year in 14:52.49.
``It's just one of those nights that every athlete hopes to have and you don't know if you're going to get it or not,'' she said.
Jacobs won a Volvo for last year's record and got another one Saturday night.
The distance festival at Whittier Field at Bowdoin College, sponsored by New Balance, features elite races in middle-distance events for men, women and high school runners.
