TORONTO (AP) _ Sergei Bazarevich scored six points in a deciding 9-0 run Thursday night to lead Russia to an 84-64 victory over Argentina on the opening day of the World Championship of Basketball.
Bazarevich, who played for the Soviet team that won the silver medal in the 1990 World Championship, also had an assist in the run that spanned 3 minutes and turned a 62-56 lead into a 71-56 advantage with 2:37 to play.
Russia took a 48-31 halftime lead by dominating the boards 28-9 and finished the game with a 45-23 advantage in rebounding. The final score was Russia's largest lead of the game.
Yevgeni Kissourin led Russia with 19 points, Bazarevich had 17 and Sergei Babkov 14. Russia finished with a 33-19 advantage on the free throw line.
Marcelo Nicola led Argentina with 19 points and eight rebounds and Juan Espil added 18 points. Argentina struggled from 3-point range, hitting just three of 15.
