Guard Accused of Raping Inmate

MIAMI (AP) _ A guard at a federal detention center that is under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct by employees has been charged with raping an inmate undergoing a sex change.
Christina Madraso, 35, who is seeking asylum because of alleged persecution in Mexico, had been held in an isolation cell at the Krome Detention Center since May. She said Immigration and Naturalization Service Officer Lemar Andre Smith raped her twice in a week.
``I tried to defend myself, but he's a big man and I'm a small woman,'' said Madraso, who was born a man and has taken hormone therapy for a sex change but has not completed the procedure.
Smith, who is charged with sexual assault and sexual abuse, is innocent, said his lawyer, Lance Stelzer.
Krome officials did not immediately return calls Thursday.
In May, women detainees said they were promised freedom and other favors by their jailers in exchange for sex. The claims prompted an FBI investigation.
