MOVING IN ADVANCE OF POPE'S ARRIVAL:
POPE-THE POOR-PHOTO GALLERY: ASUNCION, Paraguay — The visit by Pope Francis, who has put aiding the poor at the center of his church's mission, is raising hopes for many of the Roman Catholic faithful in the slum known as Banado Norte whose lives of abject poverty will get a rare moment in the spotlight. SENT 730 words and photo package on July 1.
POPE-VATICAN-SOUTH AMERICA: VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis is taking his "church for the poor" to three of South America's poorest and most peripheral countries, making a grueling, week-long trip that will showcase the pope at his unpredictable best: speaking his native Spanish on his home turf about issues closest to his heart. SENT 900 words on July 2.
POPE-ENVIRONMENT: AGUARAGUA NATIONAL PARK, Bolivia — Pope Francis is expected to raise concerns about the environmental costs of development next week when he meets with Bolivian President Evo Morales and his counterpart in Ecuador, Rafael Correa, on the first two stops of a three-country tour. Francis' weeklong trip follows the June release of a landmark encyclical demanding dramatic measures to halt climate change and stop the spread of "debris, desolation and filth." UPCOMING 930 words and photos on July 4.
POPE-SOUTH AMERICA: QUITO, Ecuador — Spot set-up story to move ahead of Pope Francis' arrival, to be led with developments throughout the day. UPCOMING words and photos on July 5.
POPE-VIRGIN OF CAACUPE: CAACUPE, Paraguay — Long before this small city outside Paraguay's capital came to be, an indigenous farmer named Jose is said to have prayed to the Virgin Mary when he was being chased by men who wanted to kill him for converting to Christianity. Locals believe Mary appeared and made Jose invisible — the first "miracle" in Caacupe, which would become the religious center of this poor nation. UPCOMING 600 words and photos to move on Thursday, July 9.
POPE-ECUADOR-INDIGENOUS-PHOTO GALLERY: QUITO, Ecuador — A photo gallery of indigenous celebrations that mix traditional and Catholic rituals. Move date TBD.
