Baby Fatally Injured By Bowling Ball Dropped From Overpass
Feb. 08, 1994
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) _ A bowling ball dropped from an overpass slammed through the front window of a car and fatally injured an 8-month-old girl.
The baby, riding in the back seat of the car with her 3-year-old brother, was struck in the face Sunday night and died in surgery at a Newark hospital Monday, said Ed DeFazio, the first assistant prosecutor in Hudson County.
The identity of the baby and her family wasn't immediately released.
''We're not saying someone intended to kill someone, but the level of intelligence we're dealing with is amazing,'' DeFazio said. ''It's really tragic. We're all very upset about this. I'm all broken up.''
DeFazio said the bowling ball was dropped from an elevated portion of a highway near the Holland Tunnel leading from New Jersey to New York City.
The ball apparently struck the bumper of a truck, crossed the divider and went through the front window of the family's 1991 Audi as they were returning home to the New York City borough of Brooklyn.
