Mar. 25, 1999
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) _ Sterling Hitchcock dominated for five innings and Dave Magadan hit a two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the 12th, capping a four-run rally that gave San Diego a 7-6 victory over Arizona on Wednesday.
Mark Parent and Juan Melo had RBI singles in the 12th for the Padres, who scored all four runs off rookie Jason Crews.
The Diamondbacks took a 6-3 lead in the top of the 12th when Dante Powell doubled and scored on an error, and Andy Fox hit a two-run homer.
Hitchcock allowed one run on four hits and struck out nine in five innings. Arizona left-hander Omar Daal also allowed one run and five hits in five innings.
The crowd of 10,362 was the Padres' largest of the spring.
Arizona manager Buck Showalter was ejected from the game in the 10th inning by home plate umpire Robert Drake. Showalter had gone to the plate to argue with Drake after the umpire had yelled something at one of the Arizona coaches.
``I thought he was kind of sensitive,'' Showalter said of Drake.
Showalter was thrown out of only one regular-season game last year.
