CHICAGO (AP) _ Three-time all-star game most valuable player Stan Stamenkovic of Baltimore and five-time league MVP Steve Zungul of San Diego were named Thursday to lead their respective clubs in the Major Indoor Soccer League's seventh annual All- Star Game Feb. 18 in Chicago.
Zungul, the MISL's all-time leader in goals, assists, game-winning goals and three-goal hat tricks, leads this year's scoring race with 27 goals and 32 assists and was the top vote-getter receiving 86 votes in the balloting conducted among league players, an MISL spokeswoman said.
Along with Zungul, Sockers teammate Branko Segota was announced as the other starting forward for the Western Division squad. Chicgo Borja of the Wichita Wings was named starting midfielder while his teammate, Kim Roentved, and Kansas City's Gino Schiraldi were namedas first-string defenders.
For the Eastern Division team, Tatu of the Dallas Sidekicks will start alongside Stamenkovic. The Chicago Sting's Jerry Gary will be starting midfielder while Blast defenders Bruce Savage and Mike Stankovic will comprise the backfield.
The St. Louis Steamers' Slobo Ilijevski and David Brcic of the Pittsburgh Spirit were named goalies for the West and East.
Ron Newman, coach of the defending MISL and Western Division champion Sockers, and Kenny Cooper, coach of the Eastern Division defending champion Blast, will announce the remainder of their squads Wednesday, Feb. 5.
The teams will include an additional two forwards, two defenders, a midfielder, another goalkeeper and four players at any position.
