RICHMOND, Va. (AP) _ Steve Knapp took the lead from Allen May with three laps to go Saturday night and went on to win the USAC-SCCA Formula 2000 at Richmond International Raceway.

Knapp, of Salem, Wis., led 36 of the 50 laps on the three-quarter-mile, D-shaped oval. He passed Sam Schmidt for the lead after 10 laps and stayed in front until May moved ahead on the 43rd trip around the raceway.

Schmidt finished third and series points leader Jason Bright was fourth.

Bright remained in front in the standings with 173 points. Schmidt is second with 158, sixth-place finisher Andrew Bordin is third with 129, May is next with 116 and Knapp stands fifth with 114.

The race was the first of three scheduled during ``Open Wheel Madness'' night at the track, also home to two NASCAR Winston Cup races.
