Comedian Arrested on Gun Charges
May. 17, 1998
NEW YORK (AP) _ Darryl Lynn Hughley, a comedian who often appeared on HBO's ``Def Comedy Jam'' and will have his own ABC sitcom this fall, was arrested by airport police for having a loaded gun in his luggage.
Hughley, former host of BET's ``Comicview,'' was arrested Friday morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a .38-caliber semiautomatic pistol was found in a suitcase as it passed through an X-ray scanner.
The 35-year-old comedian told police he traveled with the gun for protection.
``He said he carries a lot of cash and had already been robbed once,'' Port Authority Police officer Eric Katz said. ``He didn't know he's not allowed to possess it in New York.''
Hughley maintained his sense of humor throughout the arrest.
``He stated to me I was helping him with his material,'' said Katz. ``He says he had writer's block.''
Hughley's ``DL Hughley Show'' is scheduled to debut on ABC this fall. He joins a list of celebrities arrested for gun possession at New York City airports that includes actor Christian Slater, crooner Harry Connick Jr. and Peter Criss of the rock group Kiss.
