Apr. 24, 1986
REGGIO DI CALABRIA, Italy (AP) _ Gunmen burst into a hospital room in this southern Italian city Wednesday and shot to death a reputed mobster and his son, police reported.
The victims were identified as Francesco Serraino, 57, considered a major figure in organized crime, and one of his sons, Alessandro, 32.
Police said Serraino had been hospitalized for kidney dialysis.
The elder Serraino, who made a fortune in the lumber business, has been tried repeatedly on charges related to organized crime.
A court in Reggio di Calabria had convicted him of criminal association and sentenced him to five years prison. But because of poor health, he was allowed to serve his sentence confined to his house, said the Italian news agency ANSA.
