Minister Admits Relationship With Another Woman, Quits Post
Jun. 21, 1988
LOS GATOS, Calif. (AP) _ A television evangelist reportedly associated with the Rev. Jerry Falwell resigned as he tearfully told his congregation of a liaison with a woman who was not his wife.
The lapse lasted for 10 months and occurred seven years ago, the Rev. Marvin Rickard told church members of the Los Gatos Christian Church. Rickard, 57, and his wife, Joyce, both spoke at three services Sunday.
Many churchgoers broke into tears when they heard the news from their spiritual leader, described in a newspaper report as ''a close ally of the Rev. Jerry Falwell.''
Rickard built his congregation from 83 people in 1959 to an estimated current membership of 6,500, with a claimed television ministry of 100,000.
Charles Ferrell, chairman of the fundamentalist church's board, said Rickard's resignation will probably take him out of the pulpit but not out of the church. Final decisions on Rickard's future will be made by the board, he said.
