DENVER (AP) — A man killed by police officers in his suburban Denver home is being honored with a 21-gun salute at a private funeral.

KDVR-TV reports that Saturday's funeral service for Richard Black, a Vietnam veteran who earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, also included the playing of "Taps" and an American flag presented to his wife.

On July 30, the73-year-old Black shot a man who broke into his Aurora home and was trying to choke and drown Black's 11-year-old grandson. Soon after, police responding to 911 calls shot and killed Black inside the home.

Authorities say officers fired after Black refused orders to drop his gun and started walking toward them.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz acknowledged Metz had a significant hearing impairment.

Prosecutors are deciding whether to charge the unidentified officer who fired.
