NEW YORK — The Dow Jones industrial average closes above 17,000 for the first time on Thursday. The record high follows a string of good news on hiring and manufacturing, and continued support from central banks have pushed the blue-chip index up nearly 3 percent this year. The Dow's latest 1,000-point milestone follows two last year, when the average surged 27 percent. Another market barometer, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, is flirting with its own round-number record of 2,000. By Markets Writer Ken Sweet. UPCOMING: 700 words by 2 p.m. photos
