LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) _ New Mexico State prepared for its showdown with rival University of New Mexico by pounding Simon Fraser 106-70 Monday night at the Pan American Center.
The Aggies, who play the Lobos on Wednesday, went on a 15-0 run in the first half, turning a 6-5 deficit into a 20-6 lead.
Denmark Reid started the run with a three-pointer, Louis Richardson hit back-to-back baskets and point guard Dominic Ellison finished the run with a steal and a layup. However, Simon Fraser (6-5) closed the Aggie gap to 5 points with a 14-6 run.
But New Mexico State stretched the lead to 17 before the half. The Clan never came closer than 15 in the second half.
``Our defense wasn't bad, we were aggressive, we did a good job,'' said Aggie Coach Lou Henson. ``I think we've got to rebound better, but overall it was a good effort.''
Richardson had 27 points, Mikko Noopila scored 16, Rhonte Davis scored 15 and Reid added 14, 11 in the first half.
``Our main focus tonight was defense,'' Ellison said. ``We're progressing. I don't think there is anything we have to fix, we've just got to get better.''
