Russian Actor Bykov Dies
Oct. 06, 1998
MOSCOW (AP) _ Rolan Bykov, a Russian actor who made his mark in more than 80 films ranging from tragic epics to adventures for children, died Tuesday. He was 68.
Doctors described his death as caused by a difficult illness, Russian news agencies reported without elaborating.
Bykov made his film debut in 1955, and played roles including the part of the jester in Andrei Tarkovsky's 1969 film ``Andrei Rublyov,'' which chronicles the life of the icon painter. He directed several movies, including the film ``Scarecrow,'' which focused on children's cruelty to one another.
He was also a strong advocate for children, and worked in his last years to keep the Russian children's film industry alive.
