MEXICO CITY (AP) _ The death toll in the crash of a bus carrying religious pilgrims rose to 37 on Tuesday as officials in Jalisco state continued to account for the dead and wounded.

Survivors said the bus driver lost control while trying to pass another bus on a curve. The overloaded bus _ with 64 passengers in a vehicle meant for 42 _ plunged 40 feet down an embankment into the Rio San Pedro Sunday night.

Red Cross officials earlier said 25 had died, but by Tuesday, the state coroner's office put the toll at 37, with 27 injured. Nine of those killed were children.

The bus was carrying pilgrims from the Guadalajara area to the shrine of the Virgin of Talpa, about 100 miles west of Guadalajara.
