SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ Michael Pittman ran for four first-half touchdowns and Fresno State took advantage of six San Jose State turnovers Saturday in the Bulldogs 53-12 victory.
Fresno State (5-4, 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) recovered four San Jose State (2-6, 2-3) fumbles, intercepted two passes and blocked a punt. The Bulldogs turned all but the last fumble recovery into scores.
Fresno State's last 21 points of the first half were set up by Spartan mistakes.
Pittman, who carried 23 times for 107 yards, scored on a 1-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 16-0 lead with 12:39 left in the second quarter. The drive had been set up by Efrain Guizar's interception of a Dan O'Dell pass and 25-yard return to the San Jose State 3-yard line.
Pittman added two more touchdowns after O'Dell lost fumbles at the San Jose State 19- and 39-yard lines.
Fresno State scored in the third period after a blocked punt by Lawrence Deck. One play later, Billy Volek threw 43 yards to Anthony Tucker for a 37-6 lead with 11:48 remaining.
Following Antonio Pratt's interception of an O'Dell pass at the San Jose State 40, Jeff Hanna kicked a 27-yard field goal with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 40-6.
San Jose State fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Fresno recovered at the San Jose State 13. Carl Holmes ran one yard for a touchdown and a 47-6 lead with 13:56 left in the game. Holmes later ran nine yards for a touchdown with 3:00 left.
Pittman had begun the scoring on the Bulldogs' first possession with a 10-yard run at 11:53 of the opening period. Fresno State made it 9-0 on Hanna's 22-yard field goal five seconds into the second quarter.
The Spartans scored on a 1-yard run by Carlos Meeks with 9:06 remaining in the first half and on a 2-yard run by Billy Vuniwai with 9:27 left in the game.
