Sheriff: Campers burning feces start fire near Carson City
Jun. 13, 2018
RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Carson City sheriff says campers burning feces started a fire in a canyon near Carson City.
Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon says firefighters had a tough time with the fire Tuesday night since they didn't have air support.
The Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest said in a tweet Tuesday night that the fire was 5 percent contained.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the fire's estimated size ranges from 0.7 square miles (2 square kilometers) to 1 square mile (3 square kilometers).
A handful of voluntary evacuation orders remain in effect Wednesday for residents of Voltaire Canyon and those living in the Carson Colony.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the two campers who started the fire have been detained.
