'Hill Street Blues' Actor Rescued After Spill From Boat
Aug. 08, 1988
MALIBU, Calif. (AP) _ Charles Haid, who portrayed Officer Andy Renko on television's old ''Hill Street Blues'' and stars in the movie ''The Rescue,'' was plucked from the ocean after he took a spill off his sail boat.
Haid, 40, said he was never in danger after falling from the catamaran about a mile off Broad Beach on Saturday afternoon. He said a couple pulled him from the water 45 minutes later.
Haid said he fell into the water while trying to attach himself to a harness that allows him to lean out over the water as the wind-tipped boat rides on one pontoon.
''I was hooking on, my hook slipped and I went off the back,'' Haid said after the accident.
His brother, who also was on the boat, lost sight of him, and went back to shore for help.
The actor, who was wearing a wet suit and a life preserver, said he ''would have just floated ashore'' if the unidentified couple hadn't come along.
