London Underground Train Derails
Jan. 25, 2003
LONDON (AP) _ A train on London's Underground hit a wall and derailed Saturday, the fire service said.
British Transport Police said a number of people had been hurt but none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Witnesses saw smoke coming from Chancery Lane station on the Central Line, and a worker at a nearby sporting goods store said first aid workers had treated several people for cuts and bruises outside the station.
The London Fire Brigade said it had received a call at 1:54 p.m. saying a train had hit a wall in the station.
London's Underground system is the world's oldest and is often criticized for poor maintenance.
