BOSTON (AP) _ The Cleveland Indians placed Dwight Gooden on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, a day after he pulled himself from a start with shoulder stiffness after just 2 2-3 innings.

Gooden, 3-3 with a 5.81 ERA in 21 appearances, went on the disabled list to make room for Jaret Wright, who was activated from the DL in time to start Tuesday night's game against Boston.

``I never really recovered from my last start,'' Gooden said. ``I probably shouldn't have taken the mound.''

The Indians now have five players on the disabled list, including regulars Travis Fryman, Sandy Alomar and Wilfredo Cordero.

Gooden, who had pitched seven strong innings in his previous start, is eligible to come off the disabled list on Aug. 18.

Manager Mike Hargrove said Gooden was going to miss at least one start and perhaps two.
