The Associated Press will make its call about whether Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom based only on verified, conclusive official voting results or when the actual vote outcome is declared by Scotland's head vote tabulator, whichever comes first.

The final results in the referendum are expected Friday between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. EDT, or 0500 and 0700 GMT. They are to be announced in Scotland by Chief Counting Officer Mary Pitcaithly.

Whenever the result, the AP will expedite updated stories and other content.

Before the final outcome, partial results are expected to be released through the night Thursday and some will appear in stories and other AP content. While full exit polls are not expected, some polling firms and media outlets may make unofficial projections during the night. The AP will not do its own vote projection but may include reporting on such projections as part of its coverage.
