TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Federal authorities say that a Los Angeles businessman siphoned off more than $250,000 that came from sales of the Florida "Live the Dream" license plate.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says Michael Towner has been charged with 16 counts of wire fraud. Towner was president of a company that did work for The Dream Foundation, which was established to create and market the license plate that includes an image of Martin Luther King Jr.
Authorities allege Towner transferred into his bank account more money from license plate sales than what is allowed under Florida law.
Money from the "Live the Dream" plate is supposed to go to groups that work with the homeless and help prevent infant deaths.
Towner's attorney did not immediately return a phone call.
