Bomb hoax at Sydney premier of musical 'Cats'
Jul. 28, 1985
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Prime Minister Bob Hawke and British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber were among some 1,000 people evacuated from a theater Saturday night because of a bomb hoax at the Sydney premiere of Webber's stage musical ''Cats.''
The patrons waited outside for an hour while police conducted a search without finding any explosives and the performance resumed.
A police spokesman said an anonymous caller telephoned central police headquarters and said, ''Theatre Royal, 10 p.m.''
London's West End opening of ''Cats'' in 1981 was interrupted by a bomb scare just before the curtain calls.
