PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A graduate of St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia has given $50 million to the Roman Catholic university, the largest gift in the school's history.
The university plans to bolster its endowment and increase scholarships with the gift announced Thursday from 83-year-old James Maguire and his wife, Frances Maguire.
St. Joseph's said the gift will also be used to fund leadership training for teachers and support the university's risk and insurance management program, which James Maguire helped begin.
Maguire is a 1958 graduate who founded an insurance company that had offices nationwide.
The Maguires gave the school $15 million in 2005 to support a campus expansion.
The university has about 8,400 undergraduate and graduate students.
