Jun. 14, 1990
SEATTLE (AP) _ Scuffles erupted at a rally where American flags were burned to celebrate the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned the federal flag-protection law. Police said 16 people were arrested.
About 150 demonstrators and onlookers gathered for Tuesday night's hourlong rally at a post office, police said.
About 20 counterdemonstrators waved Old Glory, sang the national anthem and chanted, ''No more burning.''
Officers ordered demonstrators to disperse after fights broke out, punches were thrown and some people were wrestled to the ground.
''I can't tell the fascists from the communists,'' said Gary Oules, 54, of Seattle, who had stopped to observe.
