LOS ANGELES (AP) _ Gary Payton scored 29 points, including 23 in the third quarter, as the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-99 in an exhibition game Friday night.
Payton shot 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the third quarter as the Sonics built an 88-72 lead.
Patrick Ewing scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds in 26 minutes for Seattle.
Quentin Richardson's 19 points led the Clippers. Michael Olowokandi had 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Los Angeles closed within 104-98 with less than a minute remaining, but Brent Barry's 3-pointer put the game out of reach.
