BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Police in Argentina said Tuesday they are looking for two thieves on a motorcycle who killed a tourist from New Zealand while trying to rob him in a public park in the city of Mendoza.
Authorities have offered a $5,000 reward for information in the shooting death of Nicholas Heyward, 31.
The New Zealand man was walking in Parque General San Martin with two other tourists when two men came up on a motorcycle and tried to rob him. Police director Juan Carlos Caleri said Heyward did not resist but was shot twice anyway. The suspects then fled.
New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued a short statement saying it was aware of the death and that staff from its Buenos Aires embassy were in touch with local authorities trying to find out more details.
Initial reports described the victim as Australian but New Zealand diplomats later confirmed he was one of their citizens.
